Diabetes is a disease in which case the body stops or isn't able to produce enough insulin, which is a hormone that converts sugar, starches and other food (glucose) into energy we need in our every day life.

The two types of diabetes are Type 1 – in which case the body isn't able to produce any insulin at all and Type 2, in which case the body can make insulin but not enough.

Type 1 can only be treated by injections of insulin in combination with the right diet and exercise. Type 2 is treated depending on the severity by a proper diet and exercise or medications and in some cases also insulin injections.

The symptoms of diabetes are:

-         weight loss;

-         increased thirst;

-         increased hunger;

-         frequent need to go to the toilet;

-         genital itching;

-         episodes of blurred vision;

-         increased fatigue.

 

They seem relatively harmless, which is why there are a lot of people out there suffering from diabetes who are not aware of it themselves.

 

When you have some of these symptoms you should consult with your doctor and have your blood glucose level measured - when over 126 mg/dl, you have diabetes.

 

Why diabetes develops is not known, but it is believed to be genetic and lifestyle also plays a role. It is a myth that diabetes develops as a result of eating too many sweets; however obesity may trigger the development of diabetes.
