Urinary incontinence or a loss of bladder control causing mild leaking or wetting can happen to anyone but is more common in elderly people, who cannot control their bladder because of weakened pelvic muscles. But it can occur also in younger people as a result of diabetes, pregnancy, urinary tract infection, wrong dieting or medicine use etc.
To diagnose this condition your doctor will perform some tests, blood or urine tests or tests to measure your bladder emptying ability and may ask you to keep a diary of your urinating habits. All of these tests may help to suggest which type of four of the possible urinary incontinence you have – stress, urge, overflow or functional incontinence.
This uncomfortable disease, however can be easily controlled or treated – if it is caused by a medical condition, the incontinence will pass when the condition is cured, in case of weakened muscles in the pelvic area, certain exercises (Kegel exercises) have been elaborated to strengthen them. In other cases medicines (e.g. creams and ointments) or surgery may help. There is also a possibility to use special absorbent underclothing to avoid spoiling your clothes – no one will notice and you don't have to be embarrassed anymore!
