The term “alcoholism” basically describes a mental disorder, which results in the obsession to drink. Some call it a disease - some call it a mentality.
Either way, it is a very serious and progressive condition, which may have serious results – abuse of alcohol may lead to family violence, car accidents as a result of drunk driving, loss of job, serious health problems and even death etc.
What is worse, it is very hard to notice whether someone has a drinking problem – even those closest to you may struggle with alcoholism but you may not recognize it. It is a problem people never admit to, because they rarely realize having it themselves.
Alcoholism is not only the problem of adults, these days more and more children abuse alcohol every day. The fact that it is forbidden by law for teenagers under the age of 18 or in some places even the age of 21 makes no difference.
The first step is recognizing the problem and the second step, which is considerably harder to take, is getting help. There is the possibility of joining support groups, which have proved to be very effective. There are also certain medications used in treating alcoholism e.g. the natural medication containing kudzu root, which has the effect of reducing alcohol cravings.
Alcoholism is a severe condition; don't let it ruin your life and the lives of people around you! Don't be embarrassed to seek for help!
