There is no precise definition of hemorrhoids but they can be referred to the clumps of tissue, which contain blood vessels within the anal canal and the area surrounding it, and the supporting tissue, which is made up of muscles and fibres.
Hemorrhoids are very often referred to as a disease and a medical condition but hemorrhoids exist in everyone. It is only when the clumps enlarge or swell that we can speak of a medical condition or a disease.
The main reasons for this enlarging of the clumps to take place are straining yourself, pregnancy, diarrhoea, aging and also anal intercourse. Mostly the hemorrhoids enlargement or swelling takes place in men and women between the ages 45 to 65.
Along with the swelling, bleeding of the clumps may also occur. The most common types of hemorrhoids are internal and external hemorrhoids. If the internal hemorrhoids swell up and protrude outside the body, they are called external hemorrhoids.
To prevent hemorrhoids from becoming a problem you should:
- drink more fluids
- eat more fibres
- avoid straining yourself
- exercise more.
For some people, hemorrhoids become a problem every now and then and then pass spontaneously. For others it is a more serious problem and may need surgical interference.
* In case you suspect the swelling of hemorrhoids for the first time, we recommend you see your doctor for a correct diagnosis.
