A majority of people around the world suffer or have suffered from different types of allergies - from allergic rhinitis commonly known as “hay fever” to atopic dermatitis, or allergic skin reactions.
An allergy basically means you are oversensitive to some substances called “allergens”. This means that when you are exposed to these allergens you develop certain abnormal symptoms, which non-allergic people don't. These substances most commonly include pollen from trees, dust, some house chemicals, cosmetics, mould, furry pets, some foods or medications etc.
The symptoms of some allergic reactions, mainly the reactions that are the result of inhaling the allergen, are very similar to those of a simple cold; the difference is that in case of the allergic reaction, the symptoms last longer.
Other symptoms also include skin reactions – itching and a rash, which develop when your skin is in direct contact with the allergen or when you have eaten something containing allergens.
In case of a severe allergic reaction, called Anaphylaxis, medical help is needed. The symptoms of this condition include shortness of breath, nausea, anxiety, cramps, headaches, hives, loss of consciousness, low blood pressure etc.
If you suspect you are allergic to something you should get yourself tested. Consult your doctor and you may be able to prevent later allergic reactions by avoiding contact with the allergens!
